Flight Fiber by Antietam Broadband
Fiber internet is coming to Sykesville!
Antietam Broadband is working to expand their fiber internet network through Carroll County, including in the Town of Sykesville! Work is expected to begin in the Town of Sykesville soon. The Town will be updating this page with any information we receive; however, please reach out to Antietam Broadband at 1-888-573-0004 if you have questions.
Construction Process
Antietam Broadband has a construction process with several steps. At the end of their construction, they will return the rights-of-way to pre-construction conditions. Their process includes utility location, boring, and dropping fiber, and restoration.
Utility Location
Before any construction, the underground utilities must be identified and marked. You may see temporary paint marking or flags in the utility right-of-way on your property. The different colors designate what is underground. Common colors include:
- White: Proposed Construction Route
- Red: Electric
- Yellow: Gas
- Orange: Communication
- Blue: Water
- Green: Sewer
Boring
After the utilities are located, machines are brought in that are designed to pierce the ground at a low angle and create a path for the fiber-optic cable to be buried. This machine causes minimal disturbance at the surface. Once the path is created, a conduit for the fiber-optic cable is pulled through the path.
Fiber Drop
The connection from the fiber-optic cable on the street to your house is called a Fiber Drop. Call Antietam Broadband if you are interested in having your house connected. This is not part of the standard fiber installation in the utility rights-of-way.
Restoration
Once work is done on a utility right-of-way or property, the construction crew will work to restore any disturbances and return the area to pre-construction conditions.
